The early beach photographer (1850-1914) was itinerant and and the work produced by these practitioners has too readily been dismissed as inartistic disposable wears – cheap seaside ephemera. These photographers provided while-you-wait ambrotypes (photographs on glass) or ferrotypes (photographs on enamelled iron, commonly called tintypes) and research at SEAS Photography has provided an opportunity to significantly reconsider previous aesthetic, technical and cultural disregard.
